The Dutch Max Verstappen fans cheered, danced and celebrated. And yesterday they got their money’s worth in qualifying! Her superstar dashed into pole position and took first place on the grid for the second time in a row at the Red Bull Ring. And yet “King Max” was a little pissed off

“The Pole is good, but not the way it happened,” said Verstappen. The criticism: He was the first driver to hit the track in Q3. “Never do that to me again,” the World Cup favorite scolded over the pit radio. Team boss Christian Horner reassured: “He was the first to go. There you have no air resistance or no slipstream. Max wasn’t satisfied. ”And yet in the end it was clear: Verstappen took seventh pole position of his career.

However, there was a “bitter pill” for the big Mercedes rivals: only fourth for Hamilton, fifth for Bottas, right behind Red Bull driver Sergio Perez.

Evil birthday mail
The big surprise was Lando Norris instead. The Briton landed only 48 thousandths (!) Behind the World Cup favorite in second place. For the first time since 2012, a McLaren is back in row one on the grid. For the Briton it is the best starting position of his career and it is a historic moment: the front row of the Formula 1 starting grid has never been younger than those with Verstappen (23 years old) and Norris (21 years old). Norris beamed: “That was one of my best laps. And the fans are so cool here too – everyone in orange, they definitely support McLaren and not Max, ”Norris winked, referring to the orange team color of his racing team.

Sebastian Vettel received a “nasty birthday post” on his 34th day of honor: The German blocked ex-world champion Alonso in Q2, who was unable to advance to Q3. “Seb” was moved back three places and now starts eleventh. A tough but fair decision by the commissioners.
