Fort fires rage in southwestern France amid new heat wave

France, like the rest of Europe, is having to deal with the heat wave and the drought which have triggered multiple wildfires on the continent over the past two months.

“The fire is spreading and has now spread to the Landes department,” local authorities in the Gironde wine department said in a statement, adding that 500 firefighters have been mobilised.

The Gironde, in the south-west of France, was affected in July by two forest fires which destroyed more than 20,000 hectares of forest and led to the evacuation of nearly 40,000 people.

Fires were also raging in other parts of the country on Tuesday, one in the southern departments of Lozre and Aveyron, where nearly 600 hectares have already burned and where Interior Minister Grald Darmanin is to report. return later in the day.

Another fire is in the Maine et Loire department in western France, where 650 hectares have been burned and 500 are threatened, according to local authorities.
