Fortnite Chapter 4 paves the way for next-gen gaming

The launch of Fortnite Chapter 4 is an opportunity for the developers to offer a major update and demonstrate the Unreal Engine 5.1.

The two most important products of the publisher Epic Games are undoubtedly Fortnitethe famous battle royale, and the Unreal Engine, the most popular game engine in the world. The first also plays the role of demonstration for the second.

Last example, the transition to Fortnite Chapter 4 which is an opportunity for Epic Games to offer a great update to the game and in particular a transition to Unreal Engine 5.1. This is the first game to our knowledge that uses this new version of the engine and highlights its most advanced features.

Nanite and Lumen: Fortnite has never looked better

With this update, Epic Games notably integrated the use of Nanite and Lumen in its game, which provides the most visual change at first glance.

Nanite makes it possible to display very complex objects in terms of geometry. It is used for buildings or large objects and represents millions of details in 3D. Epic Games says that every brick, stone, or wooden plank in a house is properly modeled.

The editor also mentions the use of Nanite for vegetation with 300,000 polygons for a single tree. Here again, the modeling pushes the details down to the smallest flower.

Lumen is the Unreal Engine 5’s light engine that creates the realistic effects seen in game screenshots. It’s a global illumination system in real time at 60 frames per second using reflections in ray tracing. Epic Games says the lighting effects will be used just as well for static backgrounds as they are for in-game characters, so a character wearing bright red clothing might display a slightly reddened shadow on the walls.

In addition, the developers have integrated a system of virtual shadow mapswhich allows you to create very realistic and very detailed shadows for each object.

How to take advantage of these new features?

To continue to guarantee the game’s high compatibility with all types of devices, especially smartphones, the new graphics in Chapter 4 are optional.

On PC, it will be necessary to use the DirectX12 rendering mode (new default mode), activate the options ” Nanite Virtualized Geometry ” and “Global Illuminationto high or ultra. You also have to setreflectionson Lumen high. To enable these options, Epic Games recommends at least an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 graphics card or a Radeon RX 5700.

On PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series S and X consoles, it is also possible to take advantage of these settings. However, you must deactivate the 120 FPS mode in the game options.

In addition, the game is no longer compatible with Windows 7 and Windows 8. The publisher prefers to concentrate its support on Windows 10 and 11. If your PC is too old to run the game with these new options, Epic Games recommends use the service ofcloud gamingGeForce Now.
