Epic Games has, with Fortnite, a real nugget, given that players do not hesitate to spend money to obtain the skins available in the game store. skins (outfits, accessories or even dances), to be more and more imaginative. Recently, choreographer and YouTuber Kyle Hanagami has filed a lawsuit in federal court for the Central District of California, accusing Epic Games of copying one of his dances.
The dance in question can be seen below, to the beat of Charlie Puth’s song How Long, which has been viewed over 35 million times on YouTube. And according to its creator, Epic Games would have used it, without its agreement, for the emote “It’s Complicated”. The latter first saw the light of day in 2020, on the occasion of Chapter 2 Season 3, and has been reintroduced several times in the game store, but has never, officially at least, mentioned Kyle Hanagami. Moreover, to show the similarities, his lawyers created a video showing the supposedly copied moves side by side.
As you can see, part of it is indeed similar, although there are differences. Incidentally, the unofficial Fortnite wiki mentions that this emote is partially based on Kyle Hanagami’s choreography. It remains to be seen what the court will conclude.
This is not the first time that Epic Games has been accused of plagiarism, in particular for the creation of its dances. However, although there may sometimes be copies, it is difficult to design original movements from A to Z without some coming close to what has already been done in the past.
