As you have read, Xbox hope to come up with more free-to-play of the genre via this free version of the Xbox Cloud Gaming : it fits in initiative Xbox Everywhereaiming to make even more titles “Cloud Aware” and democratize access to the cloud gaming inside and outside homes.

At Xbox, our mission is to bring the joys of gaming to everyone, putting you at the heart of everything we do. We want you to be able to enjoy the titles you love, with whomever you want, on the devices you already own, all over the world. We call this philosophy: Xbox Everywhere.

We continue to want to make video games more accessible to more and more people, and we want to reach the three billion players in the world. To do this, we’ve invested heavily in the cloud, so you can play your way, so video game creators can reach a wider audience, and design, update, and manage their titles using the best services and tools that the cloud offers. We’ve been able to do all of this through our partnership with Azure, which reaches more people than any other cloud provider.

Since the launch in 2020, we’ve seen an impressive evolution: more than 10 million gamers have tried streaming games via Xbox Cloud Gaming (in Beta) thanks to their Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership.

Today, we have reached a new milestone by making this business model accessible to even more people, beyond Xbox Game Pass, with our very first free-to-play title. In partnership with Epic Games, Fortnite is now available via the Xbox Cloud Gaming, you can play it on an iOS device, an Android phone or tablet and on a Windows PC via an internet browser. This is just the beginning, we will continue to learn and listen to your feedback so that we can bring you more free titles through the cloud.

Our constant expansion and creation of new business models has been possible because of how we have evolved the cloud to include it in the Xbox ecosystem. We started with Android devices and servers using the power of Xbox One S. Since then, servers have bespoke Xbox Series X, cloud gaming has come to Windows PC, iOS phones and tablets, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S and we’ve even started making it compatible with the Steam Deck. The community has also managed to play in the cloud with unconventional devices via a web browser and it looks like they had fun doing it. In total, players from 26 countries played on more than 6,000 different devices, numerous Android phones, a multitude of PCs and iPhones of all generations.

Cloud Gaming is also available in more countries, such as Mexico, Japan or Brazil. The community has been exceptional in these countries, Brazil in particular has exceeded all our expectations. The service was so popular in the first few weeks that demand outstripped our server capacities, to the point that we had to react quickly to deploy more machines. The enthusiasm of these new countries and making more games available on more devices are encouraging results. In the coming months, expect to see cloud gaming available in even more places, we can’t wait to tell you more.

None of this would be possible without amazing content. We are lucky to have a cloud service that can bring you games, but also to have access to the rich history of many studios that have developed titles in very different genres. Since our launch less than two years ago, we’ve worked with over 125 developers to make more than 350 Xbox Game Pass games cloud-enabled. We’ve also found that the cloud makes discovery even easier, as it reduces the time it takes to simply try out new games. On average, Xbox Game Pass members who use the cloud discover and play about twice as many games as those who don’t play in the cloud.

The way these games are delivered to your devices has also evolved. In the beginning, all of our games were simply ported to the cloud, so developers could work as easily as possible, without needing to modify code to make their titles work on our platform. We were able to grow the catalog with hundreds of games and several of them were very pleasant to play this way.

Over time, we’ve evolved to make games Cloud Aware, so simple changes on the developer side can improve the overall experience. The latter can choose to add touch controls, whether it is a basic interface or custom controls like those that can be seen in Hades, or for example to increase the size of the font of a title depending on the device used to play it. When cloud gaming was launched, only one title could be called Cloud Aware: Minecraft Dungeons and its touch controls. Today, more than 150 Cloud Aware games offer touch controls and these find their audience more easily. On average, games with touch controls are played twice as much, and 20% of Xbox Cloud Gaming gamers exclusively use touch controls.

Cloud Aware Games goes beyond that, enabling ninth generation titles to be played on Xbox One, via the cloud. Microsoft Flight Simulator is a good example. Available in the cloud since March 1, it quickly became the most played cloud game on phone, tablet, PC and console for the month of March. Those who don’t normally have access to ninth-generation titles can now enjoy them on the devices they already own.

Microsoft is he on the way to winning the war of cloud gaming ? Only the future will tell, but it is in any case in a good position to make a good place for itself on the market.
