Four astronauts climbed a SpaceX rocket on Friday to fly to the international space station (ISS). The start was successful. Everything went according to plan. Until seven hours after the start of the crash alarm went off!
An unidentified object, presumably space debris, crossed the spacecraft’s path. Anxious minutes followed – there was no time for evasive maneuvers.
45 kilometers away
The astronauts put on their protective suits. A safety measure in the event of a real crash. A video shows the object flying past the missile.
What looks like a crystal clear is actually 45 kilometers between the spaceship and the junk. Experts from the European Space Agency assume that 129 pieces of debris are in orbit. For missions into space, they currently pose one of the greatest dangers: an impact is difficult to foresee and could have devastating consequences.
In the case of the four astronauts on the SpaceX rocket, everything went well: They arrived safely on the ISS – and were warmly welcomed. (hah)
