Like Fairphone, Framework will also start selling refurbished models on its official website. This measure, which aims to reduce e-waste, initially concerns “ the small number of devices returned to it under its 30-day return warranty after purchase of a new Framework Laptop model. In parallel, the sale of refurbished extension modules (HDMI, USB-C, USB-A, DisplayPort, etc.) is also topical.
Like new at a contained price, but for the moment only across the Atlantic
In its press release, Framework explains that it is aiming for like-new condition with its refurbished products, which will obviously benefit from the same guarantee as new products. To do this, the brand carries out a complete examination of each device and replaces any parts that do not meet its requirements. The affected machines are then tested again and cleaned. Framework, however, indicates that some ” cosmetic restrictions ” can in certain cases be topical, but the group claims to be “ very strict on the condition of refurbished devices offered for sale on its site.
The good news is that the prices displayed for these refurbished Framework Laptops are rather attractive. The bad news is that they are only available in the United States and Canada. In Europe, Framework does not, at this stage, have enough returned devices to allow it to launch the same resale system… at least not yet.
Framework would like to go even further
As reported Engadget, the cheapest refurbished model is listed at $600. It features an Intel Core i5-1135G7 but comes with no memory, no storage, no Wi-Fi, and no power adapter. The expansion cards (for the connectors) and the OS are also to be installed in addition. For comparison, the same model new costs $680. To add 16 GB of DDR4-3200 RAM, 1 TB of storage, a Wi-Fi module, an AC adapter and a refurbished expansion card pack (2 USB-C, 1 USB-A and 1 HDMI) , the total price then amounts to 905 dollars in the United States.
Refurbished models with a Core i7-1165G7 or a Core i7-1185G7 are also available on the American Framework Store, this time for 800 and 1,069 dollars respectively, again in ” barebones “.
Finally, note that the brand could go further in the future. A spokesperson for the group interviewed by us a few weeks ago told us that Framework was considering launching a marketplace that would allow its customers to resell used parts for the Framework Laptop. It would be an excellent initiative to avoid letting an old Framework motherboard die in the bottom of a drawer after a hardware upgrade.
