France “condemns with the greatest firmness acts of violence”

France “condemns in the strongest possible terms the acts of violence committed by settlers against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank”and calls on the Israeli authorities “to bring the perpetrators of this violence to justice without delay”declared Tuesday evening April 16 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by press release.

The death this weekend of an Israeli teenager murdered in unknown circumstances in the West Bank provoked major reprisals from settlers who attacked villages, burned Palestinian homes and cars, killing at least two people. In addition, two Palestinians were shot and killed Monday in the northern West Bank after clashes with Israeli settlers, the Palestinian Authority-controlled health ministry said Monday.

France “condemns the murder” of the Israeli teenager this weekend “which cannot in any way justify this violence”but also “with the greatest firmness the acts of violence committed by settlers against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank. » “These coordinated armed attacks, carried out in the presence of the Israeli army, have already caused the death of four Palestinian civilians”adds the Quai d’Orsay, which denounces “unacceptable acts”.

“France calls on the Israeli authorities to bring the perpetrators of this violence to justice without delay, and to ensure the permanent protection of all civilians in accordance with its obligations under international law”urges the French ministry in the press release.

“This violence is the consequence of the continuation of the colonization policy which fuels tensions and constitutes a serious violation of international law (…) France, which has already taken measures against violent settlers, is considering new measures in conjunction with its partners”he emphasizes again.

In the West Bank, at least 468 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli soldiers or settlers since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, 2023, according to the Palestinian Authority. Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, where more than 490,000 Israelis reside, are all illegal under international law.
