Since September 2023, the France Identity application has been available on iOS and Android. Thanks to the latter, French people can dematerialize their identity card, but also their driving license (since February 2024).

This makes it possible in particular to present your documents to the police or to carry out administrative procedures (such as the power of attorney for the next European elections) without having to carry around your physical papers all day long. These virtual documents will now be accepted as proof of identity on board SNCF trains.

In a message aimed at reacting to recent attacks on crew chiefs during identity checks, Alain Krakovitch, director of TGV-Intercités, indeed mentioned the application after listing the documents to be presented when his agents pass through. After mentioning the identity document, while specifying that photos are not accepted because they can be falsified, the manager declared: “It is also possible to present a visual of your identity card on the France Identity application.”.

In response to its publication, he adds that this new directive is being communicated to the 2000 captains. It is therefore recommended to keep your physical papers for the moment to avoid running into an agent who has not yet received the information.

We also learn that this proof of visual identity is a temporary device to justify one’s identity on board SNCF trains. Ultimately, a feature called SNCF Control, developed in cooperation with ANTS, should allow identity control by retrieving information from France Idité using the smartphone’s NFC chip. For information, this control method is already used during driving license checks carried out by law enforcement.
