France offers aid to the Tonga islands after the tsunami

PARIS (Reuters) – France stands ready to come to the aid of the people of the Tonga islands after the tsunami triggered by the eruption of an underwater volcano that hit the archipelago on Saturday, the spokesman said on Monday. of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“France stands ready to respond to the most urgent needs of the population, via the FRANZ mechanism for regional coordination of humanitarian assistance in the event of natural disasters”, he declared during a press briefing.

The FRANZ mechanism refers to a tripartite agreement signed in 1992 which associates France, Australia and New Zealand to allow humanitarian assistance to South Pacific countries hit by natural disasters.
