PARIS (Reuters) – The police custody of the alleged perpetrator of the shooting that killed three people on Friday in Paris near a Kurdish cultural center was lifted on Monday and a referral is planned for counts of “murder in reason of race, ethnicity, nation or religion,” the prosecution said.

The qualifications “attempted assassination because of race, ethnicity, nation or religion”, “unauthorized acquisition and possession of a category B weapon” and “carrying of a category B weapon prohibited” have were also held against the suspect, who will be presented during the day to an examining magistrate for a probable indictment.

The prosecution requested the temporary detention of this 69-year-old man of French nationality.

He was arrested on Friday just after opening fire successively on a woman and two men present in front of the Kurdish cultural center located at 16 rue d’Enghien, in the 10th arrondissement of Paris.

His police custody had been lifted for a time for placement in a psychiatric infirmary.

During the hearings of the alleged assailant, the latter described himself as being depressed with the desire “to murder migrants, foreigners” since a burglary of which he was the victim in 2016.
