PARIS (Reuters) – The situation is “still unfavorable” on the front of the two fires that have been raging since Tuesday in Gironde, where 7,300 hectares have burned in four days, the prefecture of New Aquitaine and Gironde said on Friday morning.

A thousand firefighters are mobilized, with the support of nine water bomber planes, to try to control the fire in Teste-de-Buch, near Arcachon, where 3,200 hectares and three houses and two restaurants have been destroyed , and in Landiras, south of Bordeaux, where 4,200 hectares burned and 480 people were evacuated overnight.

Another forest fire broke out on Thursday near Tarascon, in the Bouches-du-Rhône. It devastated a thousand hectares before being stabilized, firefighters said.

In total, a thousand people had to be evacuated in the Landiras region and 10,000 others in the Arcachon basin, including many holidaymakers staying in campsites.

France, like the rest of Europe, is undergoing a second heat wave this summer which is fueling the risk of fires. Other forest fires have broken out in recent days in Spain, Portugal and Croatia.
