France: slight decline in household spending in January

(CercleFinance.com) – In January 2024, French household consumption expenditure on goods fell by 0.3% in volume over one month, after an increase of 0.3% in December 2023, according to CVS-CJO data of INSEE.

The latter explains this decline by the decline in purchases of manufactured goods (-1.5%), in particular car purchases, while energy expenditure (+1.3%) and food expenditure (+0.4%) %) are increasing.

Furthermore, still for the month of January, INSEE reports a decline of 4.4% year-on-year in French industry producer prices (after -2% in December), mainly due to energy (-1.1% excluding energy).
