PARIS (Reuters) – Emmanuel Macron said in a telephone interview with Volodimir Zelensky on Tuesday that France would step up its arms deliveries to Ukraine in the face of Russia’s military offensive, the Elysee Palace reported.

During a meeting lasting 1 hour and 10 minutes, the French and Ukrainian presidents also discussed possible ways to allow Ukrainian grain exports, the French presidency said.

Emmanuel Macron presented to Volodimir Zelensky his idea of a European political community, aimed at supporting countries wishing to enter the European Union, said the Elysée.

He “confirmed (…) that Ukraine’s application for membership of the European Union would be studied at the European Council in June on the basis of the opinion delivered by the European Commission, and in the spirit expressed at the Versailles summit by all the member countries declaring that Ukraine is part of the European family”.

The Elysée, like Volodimir Zelensky a few moments earlier on Twitter, described this telephone exchange as “long” and “substantial”.

The Ukrainian president clarified that he had focused in particular on France’s military support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia and on granting his country EU candidate status.
