The majority of deputies approved the bilateral security agreement concluded between Paris and kyiv. The National Rally abstained while trying to assure Ukraine of its support and thus adopt a strategy of least risk a few months before the European elections.

The National Assembly approved, Tuesday evening, by a large majority the security agreement between Paris and kyiv, despite the opposition of LFI and the communists and the abstention of the National Rally (RN).

Four months before the European elections, and while the polls give Jordan Bardella a comfortable lead, the RN wants to divide as little as possible. During the vote in the Assembly, faced with the government’s stated objective of putting the RN at odds with its relations with Russia, Marine Le Pen stood up, paid tribute to Alexeï Navalny and saluted the Ukrainian resistance.

“To the hundreds of thousands of dead and wounded caused by this terrible war, to the millions of displaced people, to the civilian populations who still suffer it every day. To the attacked Ukrainian nation, we owe our respect and our support,” he said. she declared.

A spirit of gathering

Reassuring as much as possible is the objective of the RN, convinced that its arrival in power is only a matter of time. To do this, the party measures the scope of each decision. Favorable vote on the immigration law or on the constitutionalization of abortion… even if it means disappointing a conservative electorate.

This minimum risk strategy is accepted: “We are no longer in a logic of division, but in a spirit of unity,” confides a member of the party. The tactic seems to be paying off despite competition from Reconquête!, Eric Zemmour’s party, keen to target an electorate more in search of radicalism.
