Francofolies: Emmanuelle Béart and Edouard Philippe tell their music stories

In La Rochelle, unexpected personalities come to talk about their favorite songs. They are then performed by a group of musicians.

We’ll sleep together, Lady Dream, a song of legionnaires: at the Francofolies, personalities like Emmanuelle Béart or Edouard Philippe are invited to speak in public about their favorite songs, played live by musicians. The actress and the former prime minister did not go together in the schoolyard of old La Rochelle requisitioned for this exercise. It would have been better.

Emmanuelle Béart drops a big “Ooh there…” when she learns that the leader of the Horizons party will succeed her the next day. The political orientations of the mayor of Le Havre are very far from the convictions of the actress, with commitments to the left. “The Francofolies are not political”, démine Gérard Pont, patron of the festival, adding: “I had already invited a former president (Francois Hollande). Why not a former prime minister?.

What is the relationship between Edouard Philippe and music? He had quoted Bob Dylan in his policy speech in 2017. And, in the documentary Edouard my friend on the right we saw the tenant of Matignon listening to rock, Chuck Berry among others, in his office. “When we had news that was less bad than the others, we happened to celebrate it with somewhat loud music at Matignon”, he confides, tan and sky blue shirt, in front of a hundred people.

“Social Rage of the Clash”

The politician uses the right words, like “I can be the target of anarchist songs but I am not the target audience”. Even though “the social rage of the Clash” find favor in his ears. “The song can be a weapon, the playlist an arsenal”, he also lets go after the interpretation of No you don’t have a name, by Anne Sylvestre. A song about abortion chosen to denounce the questioning of abortion by the conservative Supreme Court of the United States.

This absent gesture by Dominique A. lady dream by Alain Bashung and the Ballad of Melody Nelson by Serge Gainsbourg are his other choices. “The first French 45 I had bought was Where are the women ? of Patrick Juvetwhen I was ten years old, a choice that my parents – literature teachers – did not understand, whereas Bashung, they liked, for his sense of image, his ellipses”, he says. His last choice surprises: Eugenie with tears in her eyessong of the Foreign Legion. “A sweet piece that I used as a lullaby for my children”. A title also taken up by Mouloudji.

“Not to be ‘the daughter of'”

When Emmanuelle Béart, in a bun and glasses with turquoise smoked glass, presents her songs, we are in “the intimate” as she says. There is Joe Dassin (The Team at Jojo), which she sings with her children in the car, or Jean Ferrat (We will sleep together), which she dedicates to the man who shares her life. And his father, Guy Béart. Seine, go was written against the background of his parents’ separation. When Éric Fottorino, journalist and writer hosting the meeting, asks if this song “was not an attempt to win back (his mother)”, the star of Manon des Sources smiles. “If you knew my mother, you would know not. When she leaves, she leaves.

The film and theater actress looks back on her relationship with her father. She confesses her “shame”, small. “I had my mother’s name at school, I didn’t want to be ‘the daughter of'”. “One day, in 6ein Cogolin (Var), the music teacher chooses living water and, there, I say to myself: “Oh no, help!”». She is the subject of this song. Guy Béart has long considered his daughter’s commitments too “frontals”. “When I was at the Saint-Bernard church occupied by undocumented immigrants, he said to me: “I don’t agree, but I’m with you”. From there, I got closer to him..
