François Fillon: why his retraining still makes people cringe


Exit politics, François Fillon goes into business. After the fictitious jobs scandal that plagued his partner in 2017, the former Prime Minister is getting closer to Russia despite strong tensions with the West.

The ambitions of the former Prime Minister have in fact gradually diminished after his condemnation in June 2020 at five years in prison, two of which are closed in the context of the much publicized affair of fictitious jobs. Looking for new opportunities, husband of Penelope Fillon recently launched alongside a famous Russian petrochemical company founded in 1995 and based in Moscow: Sibur. The catch? The group is led, among others, by Gennadi Timchenko, a close friend of the president Vladimir Putin, president in the midst of controversy.

Indeed, the Kremlin is currently in a delicate situation with Ukraine. The rapprochement of François Fillon in the field of the Great Bear has not viewed favorably by everybody. On Thursday 23 December, the company Sibur published an updated list of its board of directors acknowledging the presence of the former close to Nicolas Sarkozy. The latter was thus appointed to the group’s board asindependent administratort. At the end of June François Fillon had already gained a foothold in Russian affairs by joining the board of a another company specializing in petrochemicals and owned by the Russian state: Zaroubejneft.

Business assumed

Yes François Fillon kept a low profile after the “earthquake” of fictitious jobs, he never hid his retraining in international affairs: “Today I left the public scene and I develop my international consulting activities”, He confided to our colleagues from World in June. And to continue: “I have supported several European companies in Russia in recent months and it is in this context that theI was offered a seat on the board of directors of several Russian companies.
