Frankfurt back on the CL course: FC Bayern are only missing one victory for the title

Frankfurt back on the CL course
FC Bayern are only missing one win for the title

FC Bayern seized the opportunity offered by the pursuers RB Leipzig – on Saturday the record champions can make their new title perfect in a row. The jubilation at Eintracht Frankfurt should be just as big if the Bundesliga team actually qualifies for the Champions League.

FC Bayern Munich – Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 (2-0)

Master match ball for FC Bayern: Munich is about to win the ninth title in a row in the Bundesliga. Unimpressed by the theater of coach Hansi Flick, the strong record champions won 2: 0 (2: 0) against Bayer Leverkusen and with another success can already on Saturday (3.30 p.m. / Sky and in the live ticker at ntv.de) at Mainz 05 die Celebrate 31st German championship of club history.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting brought the playful Bayern into the lead in the 7th minute. Joshua Kimmich scored the 2-0 (13th) a little later against a Werkself who was overwhelmed, especially in the first half. Four game days before the end of the season, the triple winner has an almost unassailable ten point lead over RB Leipzig, which failed in Cologne (1: 2). The Bavarians took advantage of this ice cold and did not show any nakedness for three days. For Leverkusen, however, the hopes of qualifying for the Champions League after the first defeat under coach Hannes Wolf are only vague.

Without world footballer and goalscorer Robert Lewandowski, who is about to make a comeback in Mainz after his knee injury, Bayern started as expected. And were rewarded quickly. After a cross from David Alaba, Lukas Hradecky cleared Thomas Müller brilliantly, but was powerless when Choupo-Moting shot up. Likewise with the shot by Kimmich, who benefited from a too short defense of the guests.

As a result, Munich had everything under control in a one-sided game. Sometimes it looked like in training against a Werkself who was lucky not to be higher at the break. The best chance with an Alaba free kick was thwarted by Hradecky (44th). Leverkusen only came dangerously in front of Bayern’s goal once, but Patrik Schick failed because of Manuel Neuer (21st). Wolf reacted at the break and brought Florian Wirtz and Karim Bellarabi for Moussa Diaby and Jeremie Frimpong. It didn’t get much better. Bayern remained on the trigger. Again Hradecky prevented the 0: 3, this time against Müller (52nd).

Eintracht Frankfurt – FC Augsburg 2: 0 (1: 0)

Eintracht Frankfurt has found its way back on track after turbulent days in the race for the Champions League. With the 2-0 (1-0) against FC Augsburg, the Hessians reported back after coach Adi Hütter had announced their departure as well as the violent bankruptcy in Mönchengladbach and ensured some peace on the Main. Returnees Martin Hinteregger (37th) and striker Andre Silva (58th) shot the Eintracht in the fight for the first qualification for the premier class at least temporarily past VfL Wolfsburg to third place – and thus kept the pursuers at a distance. Heiko Herrlich’s team, for whom Alfred Finnbogason (73rd) put a hand penalty over the gate, could get into the relegation vortex again.

Three days after the bitter setback (0: 4) at Hütters future club in Gladbach, the Eintracht coach had demanded a reaction from his team. Instead, the Augsburg team, who had changed to eight positions, kept coming back to counterattacks from a stable defense and even missed the lead several times thanks to Marco Richter (10th), Laszlo Benes (11th) and Jan Moravek (25th).

At the ex-Augsburg-based Hinteregger, after a five-week injury break, the frustration of a brutal tackle against Marco Richter, for whom he only saw the yellow card, was discharged for the first time. It was a wake-up call for Eintracht, after all, the Austrian hit his head shortly after after a cross from Daichi Kamada.

During the break, Hinteregger was replaced by Makoto Hasebe. Hütter also found the right words in the dressing room after the poor performance: His team started more purposefully and rewarded themselves when Silva headed in after a cross from Filip Kostic to his 24th goal of the season.
