As his health has deteriorated over the past few years, Franz Beckenbauer has withdrawn more and more from the public eye. Now the football legend is giving an update.

Franz Beckenbauer celebrated his 77th birthday on September 11th – presumably without alcohol, because, as he once revealed, he does not drink it for health reasons. He has had heart problems since 2016 and received three bypasses. But the soccer world champion is brave.

Franz Beckenbauer: “I have to be careful with my heart”

“The last time I was in a stadium was a year ago. You know, that’s pretty exhausting. Everyone asks me how I’m doing and I have to tell everyone the same thing,” he says in the “Bunte” interview and reveals how he is doing at the moment: “I had a so-called eye attack in one eye. Unfortunately, I can’t see anything on the right anymore. I can deal with that. And I have to be careful with my heart.”

In addition, he is currently getting a lot of autograph mail, which he is happy to answer himself. “People probably think he never lives long. But I’ll try to stay with you for a while,” promises the 77-year-old.

“It’s a good feeling to know that things will continue”

One thing gives him hope in these times: his Franz Beckenbauer Foundation. It celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The non-profit organization offers non-material and financial help for people with disabilities and people who are ill or in need through no fault of their own. “My wife Heidi has been on the board with me for some time,” explains the former “FC Bayern” star, and further: “A foundation is made for eternity. It’s a good feeling to know that it’s going to continue, too when you are no longer there.”
