Franz Beckenbauer says goodbye to his “friend” Uwe Seeler with an open letter on the day of the funeral service in the Volksparkstadion.

For health reasons, Franz Beckenbauer (76) cannot attend the funeral service in honor of the late Hamburg football legend Uwe Seeler (1936-2022) in the Volksparkstadion on Wednesday afternoon for health reasons. However, he did not accept a public farewell letter. The emotional words appeared on the day of the funeral service in the Hamburger Abendblatt.

“Servus” and “Bye”

“My dear Uwe, here in Bavaria we say hello when someone leaves. With you in Hamburg, saying goodbye simply means goodbye. I would like to say hello and goodbye to you, my wonderful friend, because you’re going forever,” writes Beckenbauer .

For Becker, among other things, the times together as football professionals are unforgettable. They played together at the 1966 World Cup in England and 1970 in Mexico. “Being able to play with you, my friend, in the German national team was a great honor for me, who is nine years younger than me,” recalls the 1974 soccer world champion admired, he admits in the letter.

“On Wednesday, the Volkspark is all yours,” says Beckenbauer, and he concludes his lines with: “Dear Uwe, this last greeting comes from the bottom of my heart: you will never be forgotten. Servus and bye.”

Uwe Seeler is already buried

Uwe Seeler was buried on Thursday (4 August) with his immediate family at the Ohlsdorf Cemetery in Hamburg. The HSV legend died on July 21 at the age of 85 and was considered an icon of German football.
