Franziska van Almsick, 45, is one of the most successful German athletes. During her career she won a whopping 18 gold medals at European level, four silver medals at the Olympic Games and two world championship titles. For a while it was impossible to imagine the German TV landscape without it. However, the former professional swimmer, who ended her career in 2004, always kept her private life out of the public eye. In the “Bild” interview she made an exception – and talked about her sons Don Hugo, 17, and Mo Vito, 10.

Franziska van Almsick: She reveals details about her eldest son’s appearance

Franziska van Almsick has been in a relationship with entrepreneur Jürgen B. Harder since 2005 and lives with him and their two sons in Heidelberg. It is not known what their children look like, pictures have never been published, so their children should be able to decide for themselves when they turn 18. Van Almsick now reveals an interesting detail to “Bild”. Because Don Hugo is tall: “My eldest son, at 1.92 meters, shot over my head.” Then the children’s book author realized something: “When I stood next to him and had to look up so high, I thought I was getting old.”

The pandemic disrupted her young son’s plans

But the 17-year-old doesn’t seem to want to follow in his mother’s sporting footsteps. “My oldest is still incredibly talented musically,” says the children’s book author.

Her 10-year-old actually wanted to get started in sports. But then came the corona pandemic. Franziska van Almsick explains: “The pandemic period has really left its mark on my little one. He is sporty, but especially at the time when you are really involved in clubs, there was a phase where everything didn’t work.” This has “already hit” the family. “We’re working on it,” assures the former competitive swimmer.

“You don’t always get what you want”

Franziksa is not looking for success with her kids. Quite the opposite: they should develop the way they want. “The most important thing for me is that my children are happy and they do what they want […]. I don’t put any pressure on them,” says van Almsick, who then admits: “Of course, I always dreamed of sitting in a stadium at some point. But you don’t always get what you want.”
