  • The London auction house Sotheby’s is auctioning 1,400 items from the estate of Freddie Mercury, who died in 1991.
  • Among the auctioned objects: the support wing on which Mercury composed the classic “Bohemian Rhapsody”, among other things.
  • The rock star’s wing was auctioned for around two million euros. However, the estimate of the highest bid was between 2.3 and 3.5 million euros.

In addition to handwritten lyrics and stage costumes, the Queen singer’s works of art, paintings and furniture and tableware will also be auctioned. The items will go under the hammer by next Wednesday.

A note for 1.6 million euros

The note on which Mercury recorded a first draft of “Bohemian Rhapsody” was auctioned for a whopping 1.6 million euros. The draft shows that the mega hit originally had a different title: namely “Mongolian Rhapsody”. However, the word “Mongolian” was crossed out.

Exhibition attracted 140,000 people

The auction house presented the Queen frontman’s auction items in advance as part of the “Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own” exhibition. A total of 140,000 people visited the exhibition in the Kensington district. It was freely accessible and lasted from August 4th to September 5th.

Among them was the front door of Mercury’s Garden Lodge property. The front door scrawled on by fans was auctioned for 480,000 euros – that’s 20 times as much as expected.
