There Freebox Ultra now allows you to take advantage of the box’s maximum theoretical speeds, up to 8 Gbit/s for downloading and sending. But you must first follow a procedure which begins from the subscriber area.
There is something new in the Freebox Ultra subscriber area, since the operator is offering, as it promised when the box was released, an SFP+ RJ45 optical module, which is part of the subscription. Thanks to it, it is possible to go as high as possible in the speeds, whether in one direction (downloading/downloading) or another (uploading/uploading). However, this procedure is not without cost. We’ll explain it to you.
A very practical module to take advantage of the speeds of the Freebox Ultra, but which is not free
As for the practical side, the SFP+ RJ45 module fits quite simply into the 10G SFP port of the Freebox Ultra. But that’s not all. You will have only completed the first part of the path here.
The optical transceiver module is, of course, included in the subscription, obtaining it will nevertheless cost you 10 euros per Free, an amount added to your next invoice. To order it, you can go through the Freebox subscriber area.
Small important detail: you do not become the owner of the module, it being, as we said, included in the subscription. If you cancel your subscription, you will need to return it. Otherwise, Free will charge you 30 euros. Note that sending the item takes a few days. It is not finished !
The benefit of so-called “symmetrical” flow rates
To hope to reach the 8 Gbit/s promised by Free, the module alone in the box server is not enough. You must also be equipped with an RJ45 Cat 6a Ethernet network cable, and a 10G network card, so that your computer can receive the maximum speed of the line.
If you are in the best conditions, you can reach up to 8 Gbit/s symmetrical. What does this term mean? Unlike so-called “asymmetrical” speeds, “symmetrical” speeds allow you to benefit from a downlink connection and an uplink connection that are very close, if not identical in terms of speed.
Here, you can aim for 8 Gbit/s for download AND upload. This is not without its advantages, since if you host a large YouTube video, you will be able to continue browsing and watching data-intensive content. By videoconference, the quality of your retransmission will also be even greater. In short, if you can, we don’t think you should hesitate.
