Free Mobile’s famous “2 Euro Package”, free for Freebox subscribers but not very generous in terms of data, offers a booster option. Although attractive, it is not necessarily the most interesting on the market.

Of Free’s three mobile plans, the “2 Euro Package” is surely the operator’s most famous. Free for Freebox subscribers, it offers a very modest data envelope (50 MB), 2 hours of calls, unlimited SMS and MMS, with a price blocked since 2012 and, at least, until 2027. If it is a real mobile call plan, it is still possible to “improve” it by increasing it by 5 GB (gigabyte) for only 2.99 euros. To say that it is the best of the small packages, you will see that it is not easy.

A 5 GB Booster almost essential for the Free 2 euros package

Free offers fans of the €2 Plan a “5 GB Booster option” at 2.99 euros/month, let us specify without obligation, which as its name indicates allows you to benefit from an additional 5 GB per month, and unlimited calls , instead of being satisfied with 50 MB and 2 hours of calls. In Europe and the French Overseas Territories, the envelope increases to 6 GB.

Remember that the Free 2 Euro Package is not a blocked package. Once the data envelope is exceeded in France (with or without booster), each additional MB costs 0.05 euros. Simply downloading the Waze application (68 MB) could already cost 3.4 euros once the envelope is empty.

Suffice to say that the 5 GB Booster allows you to breathe a little, if the user’s needs are not excessive and they use a Wi-Fi network the majority of the time. Let’s now see if, compared to certain other small mobile plans on the market, this Made in Free offer remains advantageous.

Free is not the cheapest among very small packages

If we put ourselves in the shoes of a user who is not a Freebox subscriber and who therefore pays the full price of their 2 euro package, the package and the booster cost them 4.99 euros/month, for 5 GB of data. We are on a price of 1 euro per GB. Here, the price per gigabyte is even more expensive than for the smallest RED by SFR 10 GB offer (at 6.99 euros/month), where the gigabyte costs 0.699 euros, or for the 4G Sosh 10 GB package (6.99 euros/month) from Orange.

It’s easy to find even more interesting packages on the market. Auchan Telecom, for example, offers a package at 4.99 euros/month with unlimited calls, SMS and MMS and a 10 GB envelope, or 0.499 euros/GB. Same thing at Cdiscount Mobile, at the same price.

Where the 2 euro Free Package immediately becomes more attractive is if you are a Freebox subscriber. The price of the package drops to… 0 euros, and 2.99 euros with the 5 GB Booster, for a price per gigabyte of 0.598 euros. Only the rare packages at 4.99 euros are therefore more interesting. In the end, we understood that everything came down to a few things, but the devil is in the details, as they say.
