FreeCiv, the free version of Civilization, is finally available in 3D in your browser


FreeCiv is a well-known 4X strategy game among Civilization fans. As of today, a 3D version of this fork of the cult game is available online for the modest sum of €0.

While the Firaxis studio announced in February 2023 that the development of Civilization VII is underway, fans of strategy games remain without news of the cult empire building game created by Sid Meier. Thirty-two years after his birththe popularity is such that we ranked Civilization VI among the best strategy games on Android.

FreeCiv is an open source and free version of Civilization. It is now in a (slightly) updated version in 3D, with a scenario or multiplayer mode. As a reminder, this empire building game inspired by the history of human civilization makes you start in prehistory, your mission being to lead your tribe peacefully (or not) from the stone age to the conquest of space.

If the commercial version of Civilization has become the gold standard of 4X games (for eXploration, eXpansion, eXploitation and eXtermination), new versions of the game are rare, far too rare, for the most addicted fans.

They therefore turned to FreeCiv to quench their thirst for power and offer them new challenges. As FreeCiv is open source, there are many versions, each offering different challenges. Until now, they all shared one thing in common: an interface in 3D isometric a bit old fashionedit must be said.

After several months of testing, members of the community finally unveil FreeCiv 3D. In its online version, the game is now truly three-dimensional. Although there is always progress to be made in terms of ergonomics, it should still appeal to fans of the genre. Also, the aesthetics of the game will please the most hardcore retrogamersstuck in the 90s.
