French children of Syria: twenty-five personalities mobilize

“I have only one desire and only one interest, which is that this child returns to France”, announces Sophia Aram, one of the twenty-five personalities who have decided to “Sponsor” one of the French children of jihadists detained in the Kurdish camps in Syria, before addressing, by a personal letter, the President of the Republic.

Tuesday, October 19, the actress and columnist of France Inter was accompanied by the psychiatrist Serge Hefez and the producer Fabienne Servan-Schreiber to present, in Paris, this new action intended to draw attention to the fate of these children, imagined by the lawyer Marie Dosé. “An operation which is not meant to be humanitarian but rather political”, specified Mme Servan-Schreiber.

According to Marie Dosé, 180 to 190 children in the Al-Hol and Roj camps are concerned, for a hundred mothers. Children who, for the most part, have only known the reality of the camps. “Some are barely five years old and arrived in January 2017. If nothing is done, they would spend their fourth winter in Syria”, thus alert the lawyer.

From “Godfathers and godmothers” involved include film personalities – Jacques Doillon, Mia Hansen-Love, Audrey Fleurot, Carole Bouquet, Charles Berling, Philippe Torreton -, or even the writers – Rachid Benzine, Dan Franck and Marie Desplechin.

The attitude of France, considered less human

Marie Dosé wishes to put the spotlight on the attitude of France, considered less human than that of other countries: “Belgium, Germany and Denmark have recently repatriated a considerable number of their nationals, and have affirmed their desire to continue these operations,” recalls the lawyer. France, more and more isolated, is bogged down in its “case by case” policy to select the children it consents to repatriate. “

As for knowing if these children should be brought home without their mother, it is a false question for her, because the only country where these women are judiciarized is France. “This would allow the children to visit their mothers in detention, which is already difficult, so imagine in the camps. But at least there, we would explain their history to them. “

For psychiatrist Serge Hefez, who has followed several young returnees in recent years, the delay on this issue is absurd: “It is all the more absurd that the longer these children will stay in place, the greater their risk of strangeness in relation to French soil, in relation to French policy, will be great. “ For the psychiatrist, the problem that arises is as much humanitarian as it is security. “The risk of radicalism” also would grow up.
