The Palme d’Or winner died on Thursday in Paris at the age of 63.

“He died on Thursday morning in Paris due to an illness,” his agency said in a short statement. Laurent Cantet was currently working on his film project “L’apprenti”, which was scheduled to be released in 2025.

Cantet, born in western France in 1961, completed his training as a filmmaker at the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques.

Cantet’s biggest success to date was “Entre les murs” (in German: “The Class”, 2008). The director’s fifth feature film, a social study about a Paris school class, won the Palme d’Or, the main prize at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.

Months later, the film was selected as the official French entry for the Best Foreign Language Film nomination at the 2009 Academy Awards and was nominated for the European Film Prize that same year.
