French industrial production is gradually catching up

The automotive sector is less affected than a year ago by the difficulties in supplying electronic components.

In the current context, these are good numbers. In December, French manufacturing production increased by 0.3%, after having already increased by 2.4% the previous month. Production for the fourth quarter of 2022 is thus 2.6% higher than that of the same quarter of the previous year, according to data published by INSEE on Friday. Industry as a whole, on the other hand, was down 0.2% over one year, the sector suffering from the fall in energy production. “The delay of 2020 and 2021 has still not been caught up”, comments Charlotte de Montpellier, ING economist.

“Admittedly, French industry has not returned to its 2019 production volumes, but its level is generally stable at the end of 2020 and, contrary to what was feared, has not been significantly impacted by the repercussions of the war in Ukraine”emphasizes Sylvain Bersinger, economist at Asterès.
