French justice orders the blocking of several streaming sites

JustStream, HDStream, Cocostream, Wikiserie, Filmoflix, Wow-films… Several cultural players have succeeded in obtaining the blocking of major streaming sites by French operators. Getting there with a French connection will soon be complicated.

To watch the latest episode of The Last of Us, some regulars of pirate sites well known to the French may have to change their strategy. In an article published on February 10, journalist Marc Rees of the media the Informed reveals the existence of a court decision against several big names in streaming, including the sites JustStream, Cocostream and HDStream. The Paris court orders Orange, SFR, Bouygues and Free to block 53 domain names for 18 months, to prevent access to these sites from their boxes in France.

A war that rights holders cannot win

On the Informed, we learn that these blockages are not the result of a court decision, but of three. The first two were delivered on December 15, 2022, the last on January 19, 2023. In both cases, it was a consortium of cultural industry players who contacted the authorities to ask operators to act, as they have already been able to do this in the past.

Concretely, what will happen to these sites, which are often not hosted in France? To put it simply, people who try to access the “JustStream.org” or “HDStream.cool” URLs from the box of a French operator should soon no longer be able to do so (it is still possible at the time of the writing these lines). However, this does not mean that these sites will disappear.

The effectiveness of a blockage is always relative, in the sense that its circumvention is extremely easy. There are of course VPNs, which make it look like you are in another country, but also DNS, which allow a browser to make the link between a domain name (numerama.com for example) and the IP address of a site. If the DNS of the operators will no longer make a link with these pirate sites, the others (Google, Cloudflare, etc.) will continue to redirect to these platforms. Even more annoying, some browsers, like Apple Safari, integrate a DNS by default. In this case, the blocking will not even need to be bypassed.

Which sites are blocked?

According to justice, 2.8 million French people would go every month to the sites affected by the ban. Blocking by operators should have a strong impact on their audience, provided that hackers do not change URLs.

The list of sites concerned is as follows, for a total of 53 domain names:

  • 1080pfr.xyz
  • 1seriestreaming
  • 33french-streaming
  • 33seriesstreaming
  • Cocostream
  • Cpasfini
  • dbseries
  • Dpstreams
  • Stream
  • fifostream
  • Filmoflix
  • Moviestreaming3
  • Filmvf-streaming
  • Frenchstream.
  • Hdssfilm

In the war between rights holders and piracy actors, site blocking is common. Failing to eliminate piracy, it makes it possible to accentuate the pressure on these illegal players, while making it possible to bring some people back to the legal channels.
