PARIS, February 2 (Reuters) –

President Emmanuel Macron denounced Friday a “cowardly and undignified act” the day after the death of two French humanitarian workers in an attack by the Russian army in Ukraine.

The head of French diplomacy, Stéphane Séjourné, for his part declared on the social network X (formerly Twitter) that Russia should “answer for its crimes”.

The two French victims were members of Swiss Protestant Entraide (EPER), the NGO announced in a press release on Friday.

“A group of employees was attacked around 2:30 p.m. (Thursday) during a humanitarian intervention. On this occasion, two of the team’s valued colleagues tragically lost their lives and other employees were injured,” specifies the Swiss organization.

She said she “strongly condemned this brutal and unjustifiable attack, which constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law.”

The French president had previously confirmed the death of the two humanitarian workers on X.

The governor of the Kherson region, Oleksandr Prokudin, said Thursday that a Russian airstrike with armed drones had killed two French humanitarian workers and injured three other foreign nationals in the town of Berislav. (Written by Zhifan Liu, edited by Sophie Louet)
