BlaBlaCar is strengthening its position in the short-distance carpooling market. Positioned in this segment of activity since 2017 and the launch of the BlaBlaLines application, which has since become BlaBlaCar Daily, the French unicorn has announced that it has started discussions to take over Klaxit, a French start-up specializing in journeys between home and the work. The financial terms of this proposed acquisition were not disclosed.

A national plan of 150 million euros for carpooling
To change the situation, the government, which estimates that 70% of home-work trips are made with individual vehicles, therefore launched a plan in December 2022, a new carpooling plan of 150 million euros. The objective is to reach 3 million daily trips made by carpooling by 2027, against 900,000 at present. In this context, the government plans in particular to distribute a bonus of €100 to new drivers, so as to encourage them to share their journeys with other passengers going in the same direction.
It is therefore in this favorable climate that BlaBlaCar is preparing to get its hands on Klaxit, which claims more than 2.6 million journeys made via its platform in 2022, against 1.5 million for BlaBlaCar Daily. To ramp up, Klaxit notably distinguished itself in 2019 by recovering iDVROOM, the SNCF carpooling service. For its part, BlaBlaCar had placed its pawns in urban carpooling in 2018 with the acquisition of Less, an application launched by Jean-Baptiste Rudelle, co-founder of Criteo. With Klaxit, the company headed by Nicolas Brusson has taken a decisive step towards establishing itself in the home-to-work carpooling segment. In this context, the Klaxit and BlaBlaCar Daily applications should be merged by 2024.
