Fresh snow and wind – the risk of avalanches in Salzburg’s mountains is increasing

The coming days will bring plenty of snow – and wind. This increases the risk of new avalanches in alpine terrain.

Since last weekend there have been numerous avalanches in Salzburg: On Saturday, for example, a snowboarder was buried in Lungau, and the next day in Hüttschlag a young woman ski tourer; on Monday it was a ski tourer in Birgkar near Mühlbach. Yesterday, Tuesday, two more avalanches came off the Frommerkogel (St.Martin/Tennengebirge) and the Filzmooshörndl (Großarl). No one was swept away or buried by either of them. The wind as the master builder of avalanches Above 1800 meters above sea level, the avalanche warning level in large parts of the country is “considerable” (level 3). Fresh snow, sometimes strong winds and above all old snow ensure a correspondingly high level of danger in open terrain. These fault-prone, old layers of snow are treacherous, sometimes lying deep under the snow cover. In addition to well-considered tour selection and preparation, restraint is also called for. Meteorologists expect more than a meter of fresh snow in Salzburg’s mountains and sometimes strong winds. It brings new danger.
