The documentary filmmaker Friedrich Kappeler died at the age of 73. He became known with films such as “Why sit dyr so truurig” about Mani Matter or “Dimitri – Clown”.

The filmmaker and photographer Friedirch Kappeler was best known for the film portrait “Mani Matter – Why are you so sad?” known about the Bernese singer-songwriter.

Artist portraits and a feature film

He created other portraits of the painters Adolf Dietrich, Alois Carigiet and Varlin, the writer Gerhard Meier and the clown Dimitri. In addition to documentaries, he also made the feature film “Pride or the Return” for Swiss television in 1980. In 1989 he made the film “Der Wald” with Mathias Gnädinger in the leading role.

In 1986, Kappeler, who was born in Frauenfeld, received the Thurgau Culture Prize for Film/Video and in 2002 the City of Frauenfeld Recognition Prize. SRG Ostschweiz awarded Kappeler the 2012 radio and television prize for Eastern Switzerland, according to the culture platform ch-cultura.ch.

Digitization of the work

At the beginning of 2021, Kappeler received almost 100,000 francs from the canton of Thurgau to digitize his entire work. Since the mid-1990s, Kappeler has also acted as a board member and assessor for the Thurgau Canton Cultural Foundation. He mainly photographed analog and preferably black and white.

Friedrich Kappeler died at the beginning of October at the age of 73. This was announced by Kappeler’s family on Friday in an obituary in the “Tages-Anzeiger”.
