“Friends”
Sweater worn by Matthew Perry auctioned
To mark the 30th anniversary, costumes and props from “Friends” were auctioned off. One of them was a sweater belonging to Matthew Perry, who died a year ago.
This week, “Friends” celebrates its 30th anniversary. The sitcom began airing in the USA on September 22, 1994. To mark the occasion, the The American auction house Julien’s Auctions held an auction yesterday. Over 100 costumes and props from the cult series went under the hammer.
Couch from Central Perk pulverizes estimated price
The most expensive item was the couch from Central Perk. Rachel (Jennifer Aniston, 55) and co. often made themselves comfortable on the orange-colored seat in their local café. The sofa, which was made especially for the sitcom, sold for 29,250 US dollars. It thus smashed the original target price of 2,000 to 3,000 dollars.
The second most expensive item is also a piece of furniture. A buyer paid $10,400 for a chest of drawers from Ross’s (David Schwimmer, 57) apartment. A very special prop was close to the five-figure mark: the Geller Cup Trophy. As children and teenagers, Ross and Monica Geller (Courteney Cox) played an annual football game in their family, with the siblings as captains of their respective teams.
The trophy is a troll figure nailed to a piece of wood. On it are strips of paper with the year of the competition and the respective winners. The Geller Cup Trophy, which appeared in the 1996 episode “The Ball Game”, brought in $9,100. $1,300 was the highest bid for a business card from Monica’s short-lived catering service. Various scripts sold for around a thousand dollars.
Sweater worn by Matthew Perry fetches $6,500
In addition to props, various costumes worn by the “Friends” stars were also on the list. A green sweater worn by Matthew Perry (1969-2023) brought in $6,500. The Chandler actor died almost a year ago, on October 28, 2023, he was found dead in the hot tub of his house.
A light turtleneck sweater worn by Jennifer Aniston as Rachel also went for $6,500. Guest star clothes also went under the hammer: a pink suit worn by Winona Ryder ($2,600) and a simple white shirt worn by Bruce Willis ($3,250).
“Friends” ran in the USA from 1994 to 2004 and influenced an entire generation. Thanks to its presence on Netflix, the sitcom is now reaching new audiences.
