Recently available in China on several streaming platforms, the cult series “Friends” has seen passages related to homosexuality deleted. Censorship that angered fans.
Not long ago, China totally changed the ending of Fight Club. Today, it is the turn of Friends to be the victim of the censorship of the Asian country. Available since Friday on several local streaming platforms, the cult series has indeed seen some of its passages be deleted or modified, as well as reports the Deadline site.
It is in particular the homosexual relationship between Carol Willick (Jane Sibbett), Ross’ ex-girlfriend, and Susan Bunch (Jessica Hecht), who was censored, with any reference to this story removed from the edit. It should also be noted that the passage where Joey suggests going to a strip club has been truncated, the hero simply proposing, in the Chinese version, to go out for fun.
Upon discovering these changes, Chinese Friends fans reacted strongly on social media with the hashtag #Friendshasbeencensored. A very popular hashtag which, in turn, suffered the wrath of censorship.
It will be recalled that a real public outcry had finally made it possible to restore the end of Fight Club. Will it be the same for the censored passages of Friends?
