Fritz Wepper was buried in Munich in the presence of relatives. But a prominent friend of the late actor was apparently not invited to the funeral service. She was turned away at the entrance to the church.
On Wednesday, April 10th, family members and companions gathered in Munich to say goodbye to Fritz Wepper. The popular actor died on March 25th at the age of 82. Among those present was also Barbara Engel, 71, who was friends with Wepper. But the reality TV actress was not welcome at the funeral service.
Barbara Engel is turned away from the funeral service
Barbara Engel was married to Bernd Herzsprung, 82, from 1979 to 2008 and has two daughters Sarah Lena and Hannah Herzsprung, 42, with the actor. The latter also works as an actress. The Herzsprung and Wepper families have a long friendship: in 1979, Fritz Wepper and Bernd Herzsprung married their two friends Angela von Morgen, †76, and Barbara Engel in a double wedding. While the marriages fell apart, the friendships remained. In 2019, Angela von Morgen died after a fall – a terrible loss for Fritz Wepper and also for her friend Barbara Engel.

“They said: ‘You’re not invited'”
Now Engel also wanted to say goodbye to Fritz Wepper. But the 71-year-old was turned away at the church door. “I showed my ID and said: ‘I would like to see Bernd Herzsprung and my daughters,'” she told RTL. Her ex-husband Bernd Herzsprung came to the funeral service with their two daughters. “And then they said: ‘You’re not on the list. And you’re not invited’.” Barbara Engel is surprised: “I’m not wanted,” she says. “You just have to learn to deal with situations like that. And we had such a great time, all four of us. I mean: we got married together once, and we said in good times and in bad times, till death do you part , and that’s why I’m here.”

Farewell letter for Fritz Wepper and his Angela
According to Barbara Engel, she wanted to give her friend Fritz Wepper a farewell letter: “When everyone is gone, I’ll give him my letter for Angela. And I’m now totally happy that the two of them are finally together again and that Elmar is there and his mother, because I knew everyone very well.” Fritz Wepper’s younger brother Elmar Wepper, †79, who was also a well-known actor, died just five months before Fritz. The two brothers have now found their final resting place next to each other in the family grave.
