Fritz!box 7580 and 6590 Cable: Confusion about support from the AVM router

AVM FRITZ!BOX

The Fritz!box 7580 and 6590 Cable should have reached their end of support long ago. Nevertheless, AVM still supplies the devices with updates. Fans are confused. We clarify.

Longer lives said to be dead: the best example is the Fritz!Box 6590 Cable. (Source: netzwelt)

  • Fritzbox models only receive updates and support for a certain period of time.
  • However, AVM no longer communicates exact dates for the end of support.
  • The FRITZ!Box 7580 and FRITZ!Box 6590 Cable, for example, are threatened.

If you own an older Fritzbox, you will have to do without updates and support from AVM customer service after a certain period of time. Until recently, the Berlin-based company also communicated exact dates for the “End of Maintenance (EOM)” and the “End of Support (EOS)” for each model.

AVM no longer mentions EOM and EOS

If a box reached its EOM date, it would no longer receive updates, and once it reached EOS, you also had to forego customer support. In the meantime, that has changed. Only the current status is communicated on the AVM service side, but no more end dates.

The manufacturer justifies this in a tweet by saying that in recent years many products have been supplied with updates far beyond the EOM date because this was technically possible. AVM cites the models Fritz!Box 7580 and Fritz!Box 6590 Cable as examples.

The Fritzbox 6590 Cable shouldn’t have received any updates since New Year’s Eve 2020, the Fritzbox 7580 not since January 2nd, 2021. Nevertheless, both models received an update to Fritz!OS 7.29 in November 2021.

This is the status of the Fritz!Box 7580 and Fritz!Box 6590 Cable

It is still unclear what will happen after that. On Twitter, AVM dodges the question of whether the Fritz!Box 7580 will also receive an update to the upcoming Fritz!OS 7.50 and points out that the device has already reached its EOM. However, they are currently testing whether an update is possible.

Then it will probably also be decided whether you can still contact customer service if you have any questions. Originally, this support for the Fritz!Box 7580 was supposed to end on November 30, 2022.

Also interesting…

The Frtiz!Box 6590 Cable, on the other hand, should have a good chance of further updates. It is now even part of the Fritz!Laboratory. This allows you to test pre-release versions of future Fritz!OS updates on selected devices. Nevertheless, it could of course be the end of both models at any time. Switching to a newer model is therefore definitely worth considering.
