FritzOS 7.20 makes many new things: Big Fritzbox update starts

AVM starts the update to FritzOS 7.20. The update of the operating system brings numerous innovations and improvements to Fritz boxes and other devices from the Berlin manufacturer.

Anyone who uses a younger Fritzbox will be able to install the update to FritzOS 7.20 in the coming weeks. It starts with the top model 7590, for which the update is now available. It is not yet known when which devices will follow, but users can assume that their Fritzbox will receive FritzOS 7.20 if it is not older than three years. That's how long AVM has been developing its products. After that there is still two years of support. In addition to Fritz boxes, the update also receives repeaters or powerline devices. There are also new functions for Fritzfons and AVM's small smart home fleet. Here are the announced innovations:

WiFi and mesh

– With the update WPA3, all Fritzbox models and Fritz repeaters support the new standard for more WLAN security.

– The new "Performance Mesh Steering" improves the WLAN connections of mobile devices. In addition, the improved auto channel selection of the Fritzbox now also takes into account the WiFi environment of the mesh repeaters. This automatically selects the best WiFi channel for the complete WiFi mesh.

– A public hotspot can now be set up at the guest WiFi access, in which the data is securely encrypted.

– Particularly powerful Fritzbox models such as the Fritzbox 7590 or the Fritzbox 6591 Cable now use 160 megahertz wide radio channels, so that data in the 5-Gigahertz band can be transported faster in conjunction with compatible WLAN devices.

Internet

– With the new device lock, you can easily switch the Internet access of selected devices in the home network off and on with just one click.

– The new encrypted resolution of domain names, the "DNS over TLS" function, gives users more protection when surfing the Internet.

– The Fritzbox models 7590, 7530 and 6890 LTE support "VDSL Long Reach". This means that high download rates are possible even over long distances between the distribution box and Fritzbox if the network provider already supports this new technology.

– Starting with FritzOS 7.20, the Fritzbox 6591 Cable and 6660 Cable also have the DVB-C streaming feature. This allows free-to-air cable TV channels to be transmitted at home via WLAN.

VPN

– Workers in the home office can look forward to an almost double transmission speed of VPN connections (Fritzbox 7590, 6660 Cable, 6591 Cable).

– In addition, some other improvements have been made, for example restricting the VPN connection to certain home network devices or the possibility to set the support of NetBIOS individually for individual VPN connections.

Fritzfon

– With FritzOS 7.20, nine new ringtones are available for Fritzfons and you get an option to select sound settings for listening to media and phone calls.

– The Fritzfon's phone book suggests suitable phone book entries as you enter the number.

– The Fritzfon receives a new start screen for the temperature display of a Fritz Smart Home device.

Telephony

– With FritzOS 7.20, encrypted voice transmission according to the TLS and SRTP standards is supported when making calls.

– From FritzOS 7.20, the Fritzbox supports additional online telephone books for the uniform management of all contacts: Apple (iCloud), Deutsche Telekom (Telekom Mail) and those from CardDAV providers.

– In addition, FritzOS 7.20 brings innovations to convenience functions such as the answering machine, the fax function or call forwarding.

User interface and network storage

– From FritzOS 7.20, a language and a country can be selected via the Fritzbox user interface. Up to seven languages ​​(German, English, French, Italian, Polish, Dutch, Spanish) and over 40 countries are available.

– Users who use the Fritzbox as network storage (NAS) receive improved performance when using the Windows network drive function to access the USB storage media. Because Fritzbox now supports the protocol SMBv2 and v3 from FritzOS 7.20.

The easiest way to activate the automatic update function of the Fritzbox. If you want to search for updates manually, give fritz.box in the address line of the browser and calls up the user interface of the Fritzbox. After entering the access password, you navigate in the menu on the left system click on Update and then on Search for a new Fritz! OS. If the latest update is not yet installed, follow the instructions and update the Fritzbox software.
