This Saturday, April 13, 2024, a swarm of bikers took to the roads of France as well as in the capital to demonstrate against a measure that they consider to be “useless»: the technical inspection of two wheels has become compulsory in France since Monday April 15, 2024. In fact, it is official before the end of 2024, these are all 2.5 million motorcycles, scooters and others two wheels that will have to pass through it. If since 1992, this type of vehicle was exempt from technical inspection, leaving cars and other trucks this obligation, it is now over.

Category L including mopeds, motorcycles, scooters, motorized tricycles and quadricycles will now have to comply with this new rule. An obligation which falls within the framework of the regularization of a European directive which actually dates from 2014. Given the number of two-wheelers present in France, the administration has decided to stagger its implementation and depending on the vehicle registration date.
A deadline set according to the first registration of the vehicle
Nearly 2.4 million two-wheelers will be subject to technical inspection. A significant number which therefore pushed the administration to organize itself in order to stagger according to the date of the first release into circulation. For two-wheelers which were registered before January 1, 2017, the technical inspection must be carried out between this Monday, April 15 and August 14, 2024. For those which were put into circulation between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2019, the control will have to be carried out in 2025 and finally for the most recent two wheels, the year 2026 has been set.

With a validity period of three years, longer than for cars, the technical inspection of two wheels should cost drivers between 50 and 80 euros on average. If it is a recommended price that has been communicated, some motorcyclists are choked by the prices charged by the centers: “Near me, I saw that they were selling it for 94 euros» denounces a two-wheel driver living in Boulogne-Billancourt in Hauts-de-Seine.
Technical inspection of two wheels: what fine?
As with cars, this measure has therefore become mandatory for two wheels. Nearly 78 checkpoints will be scrutinized by the agents: brakes, handlebars, column, lights, indicators, suspensions, mirrors, axles, tires, noise, polluting emissions, etc. If the technical inspection is favorable, it is then handed over for a period of three years, after which the machine must undergo another inspection. For two-wheel drivers who risk driving without this famous key, a fine of 135 euros has been set by the Highway Code or in the most extreme cases, immobilization of the vehicle.
