Private jet trouble for Boris Johnson

Boris Johnson is strongly promoting climate protection at COP26. But after his speech, the British prime minister jet off to London for an exclusive dinner in a private jet. An avowed climate skeptic is also on the guest list. The opposition is appalled and speaks of “breathtaking hypocrisy”.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has come under fire for leaving the UN world climate summit by private jet. In his speech at COP26 in Glasgow on Tuesday, the conservative politician called for “climate change to be taken really seriously”. If leaders missed this opportunity, future generations would not forgive them.

According to a report in the Daily Mirror, Johnson got on a private jet after his speech and went to dinner at an exclusive club in London, whose membership is only for men. He is said to have met the former editor-in-chief of the Daily Telegraph and avowed climate skeptic Charles Moore.

“This is breathtaking hypocrisy from the Prime Minister,” said Anneliese Dodds from the opposition Labor Party to the “Mirror”. A government spokesman justified Johnson’s travel plans by plane on Monday by saying that the prime minister had to be able to cope with considerable time pressure. A flight from Glasgow to London takes an average of 60 to 90 minutes and the train journey around five hours.

In a statement today, Johnson said he had used one of the most carbon-efficient aircraft of its size in the world – on the most sustainable fuel. Britain will neutralize all CO2 emissions associated with the climate summit, the statement said.

The two-week COP26 started on Sunday. Negotiations on the further implementation of the Paris Climate Protection Agreement of 2015 will take place until November 12th. In this agreement, the international community agreed to limit global warming to well below two degrees, ideally 1.5 degrees, compared to the pre-industrial age.
