A deputy director of Butyrka prison in the Tverskoy district of Moscow, Russia, is currently under investigation. He is believed to be the source of a clandestine mining facility located in the premises of a psychiatric establishment run by the prison.
The director and his colleagues would have installed this mining farm in November 2021. The latter would have operated until February 2022. It would have consumed approximately 8,400 kW of electricity. This consumption at the expense of the government represents an invoice exceeding 62,000 rubles – about $1,000.
The deputy director is therefore accused of having carried out ” actions that clearly exceed his authorityviolating the legally protected interests of society or the state in a significant way “.
Cryptocurrency mining thus offers an attractive alternative income to residents of countries suffering from particularly high inflation, or those like Russia which are targeted by sanctions undermining its economy.
