For many, the smell of coffee and fresh rolls are part of a perfect day on Sunday mornings – but this will soon become difficult in the district of Viersen on the Lower Rhine, as several branches of a bakery chain will no longer be open on Sundays and public holidays.

The Stinges bakery chain, based in Brüggen-Lüttelbracht, will no longer open more than 100 branches on Sundays and public holidays from next month. In the first step, the bakeries had initially shortened their opening hours or closed them temporarily. The reason: the increased energy and raw material prices. In addition, there is a lack of employees, according to the WDR.

The salespeople had accumulated a lot of overtime due to the tense Corona period and the associated difficult personnel situation, according to the company in a statement. The employees would often have had to stand in for each other, which in turn would lead to overwork. “It gets to the substance,” said Willi Stinges, who runs the country bakery together with his brother Leo.

From November 1st there will be a fixed day off for the employees for the first time in a long time. It is also not surprising that this fell on a Sunday of all things, because: “Fewer and fewer people want to work on Sundays. Even surcharges and better pay don’t change that,” Willi Stinges is quoted as saying in the message.
