Like every year since 2015, the Les Glorieuses association has calculated the date from which women work for free. And in 2020, it will fall even earlier than usual.
Yes, this is not a (sad) surprise for anyone: today in France, on average, women continue to be paid less than men with equal positions and skills. Les Glorieuses, a feminist newsletter which deals in particular with the economy, is relaunching the movement on equal pay with a shock date. In 2020, starting November 4 at 4:17 p.m. (yes that's right), women will work for free.
Calculated according to Eurostat statistics for 2020, this date takes into account the wage inequalities that persist: being paid, 15.5% less than men, women work "free" for 39.2 working days. By deferring this figure over a whole year and for equal work, we obtain this date of November 4. And if the average were calculated on the basis of the net wages of men and women, the gap would be even more glaring: 28.7%, according to the latest INSEE survey. The reasons ? They are due to more feminized part-time jobs, as well as the fact that predominantly female occupations are less well paid. We think, for example, of the personal assistance and care sectors, also known as the "care profession", essential to our society, but feminized and poorly paid.
In parallel with this calculation, the Glorieuses also launched a petition for a feminist economic recovery plan, which would take into account the professional specificities concerning women.
