Green Minister Hermann warns of new elections

From the Greens’ point of view, the negotiations on a traffic light coalition are not progressing as desired: The Transport Minister of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Hermann, is already warning of new elections if one cannot agree on certain issues. He mentions two main areas as sticking points.

The Greens are angry about the lack of progress in the coalition talks with the FDP and SPD. “What I hear doesn’t sound so good,” said the green transport minister of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Hermann, of the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”. “The Greens, FDP and SPD are still quite far apart when it comes to traffic, but also when it comes to other issues such as climate protection.” On the subject of traffic, for example, there are “simply too many points that have not been agreed in the papers”.

Hermann already warned of the massive consequences of a prolonged hanging game. “I think that all sides have to make it clear again: If we don’t get together on climate protection in the next few days, there is a risk of new elections,” said Hermann. “Nobody can want that.”

According to Hermann, the timetable for the coalition negotiations is also in jeopardy. The working groups should present their results on Wednesday. He lacks the imagination how the disagreed points in the papers could be eliminated in such a short time. The 69-year-old top politician of the Greens therefore brings an extension into play. “We should rather negotiate well and, if necessary, a few days longer than agree to false compromises or weak formulations in the coalition agreement.” A new government that only “agrees on beautiful headings without concrete implementation measures in the coalition agreement will not be able to cope with a transformation of this size”.

Above all, the Green politician is indirectly calling for much more commitment to climate protection from the FDP. “If you do not want to abolish subsidies, reject a speed limit and do not want a ban on combustion, you have to put other proposals on the table that lead to a reduction in greenhouse gases in traffic. I expect that from responsible negotiators,” says Hermann. So far, the FDP has opposed all three of the Greens’ proposals.
