In Basel, on Saturday afternoon, a red fox got lost in a branch of the Fielmann optician chain on the market square in the middle of the city center, as reported by several news scouts. The wild dog was first sighted in the area of the ship landing and then on the market square. Pictures show how he scurried across the square and then sought refuge in the eyewear shop.

The Basel professional fire brigade had to be called in to catch the fox. A news scout reports that the animal was caught using a cloth. “All customers had to go into the store’s stairwell for security reasons,” she says. Otherwise there would have been a risk that the frightened animal would fight back and accidentally injure someone.

The fire brigade then took the fox with them and released it back into the wild at a suitable location.

Probably a younger fox looking for territory

“To see a fox in the city during the day is rather unusual,” says wildlife expert Sandro Gröflin from the wildlife research in the Basel region. There are fox burrows throughout the canton, but when foxes go forays in the city of Basel, they usually do so at night and usually only in the outskirts and outskirts. Presumably it was a male animal from the previous year. Young foxes left their families in autumn to look for their own territory. In addition, the natural mating season of the red foxes, the so-called Ranzzeit, is in winter.

“It doesn’t mean that the fox is sick just because it behaves in an unusual way,” says Gröflin. On the contrary, the red fox looks unharmed and healthy. But why did the predator get lost in the city center? The wildlife expert suspected that the fox had been looking for food, a territory or a partner the previous night. “He probably settled down somewhere where he was frightened up during the day and then accidentally got lost in the optician’s shop,” says Gröflin. “Who knows, maybe the fox just wanted to buy glasses,” he jokes.

If you meet a fox in the city, there are a few things to watch out for, according to Gröflin. “It is best to leave all escape routes open so that he can withdraw quietly and peacefully,” he advises. You should not try to touch, attract or even feed the animals.

A news scout filmed the animal guest in the Basel glasses store.
