Fuel prices rising sharply in France

Bad news for all French motorists. Fuel prices have increased sharply during the year 2021 and the trend seems to continue at the start of 2022. On the official website of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, the figures speak for themselves. Every Friday, fuel prices are recorded and shown on a curve. Between December 24 and 31, for example, a liter of diesel increased by five cents, to currently be priced at € 1.5883. A new record.

However, this increase had been suddenly slowed down in mid-December by the appearance of the Omicron variant. But it quickly regained ground just before the end of the year celebrations. Unleaded 95 E10 also experienced an unprecedented increase: +7 cents per liter in just two weeks. Despite a reduction in travel due to teleworking, motorists’ budgets are increasing.

Variable but rising prices

Fuel prices follow the price of crude oil set by the markets. Despite the sudden arrival of the Omicron variant, the spike in prices could not be avoided. As the Ministry of Ecological Transition reminds us, French supply depends 99% on imports for its oil consumption. The prices set on your fuel depend on the refining margin, the price of crude oil, taxation but also the transport-distribution margin. The inflation compensation of € 100 introduced by the government in the fall attempted to compensate for this significant increase.
