Fuels: the end of discounts makes pump prices soar, gasoline jumps by 19 cents

The rebates from TotalEnergies and the State ended on January 1. The full bill has therefore logically increased.

The increase was expected, but it is still painful for motorists. The end, on January 1, of the rebates per liter granted by the State and by TotalEnergies to reduce the refueling bill led to a jump in prices at the pump last week. The impressive rise brought gas prices to their highest level since last August.

In detail, according to data from the Ministry of Ecological Transition, the liter of diesel cost, Friday, January 6, 1.8994 euro on average. An amount up 13.3 cents over one week. The progression is even more spectacular for gasoline, which has soared by nearly 20 cents: the SP95 thus cost 1.8516 euros on average, that of SP95-E10 1.8346 euros and that of SP98 1.9150 euros.

These various products have therefore returned to their level of the end of July, beginning of August. Enough to increase the refueling bill for motorists. The increase observed last week is much more significant than during the reduction in discounts in mid-November: at the time, the price of a liter of diesel had soared by 10.4 cents, and that of gasoline by more 13 cents.

Consumers, however, are benefiting from a lull in the markets, limiting prices at the pump, despite the end of rebates. On Monday, a barrel of Brent was trading around 80 dollars, against 100 dollars at the end of July. Prices could therefore be even higher, if the raw material were more expensive… In addition, households will soon be able to receive a fuel check: according to the executive, 10 million French people – the five lowest deciles – will receive this aid of one hundred euros soon.
