Fuels: TotalEnergies will apply a 10-cent discount this summer at its motorway service stations

The tricolor giant will change its discount of ten cents applied until mid-May. Motorists will be able to benefit from it in July and August on French motorways.

Faced with inflation, private actors are mobilizing. This Friday, The Dispatch reported that the tricolor giant TotalEnergies intended to do its part to accompany French motorists during their summer holidays. Information confirmed by us. During a dialogue with readers of the regional media, the CEO of the group, Patrick Pouyanné, announced a new measure aimed at relieving the portfolio of households.

From April 1 to May 15 inclusive, all TotalEnergies service stations in metropolitan France offer a discount of 10 cents per liter to people who come to fill up. This is in addition to the discount of fifteen to eighteen centimes granted by the State since April. “Access and ELF stations as well as AS24 stations are not concerned […]. The offer is valid from the 1st liter of fuel and without a maximum amount», Specifies the energy company.

As of May 15, this aid will cease, as planned, confirms the company to Figaro. But, while inflation continues to weaken consumer budgets, the group wishes to introduce a new measure during the summer: a “ten cent discount” per liter should therefore be granted, not on the whole of the metropolitan territory, but “at all TotalEnergies stations located on French motorways“, announced Patrick Pouyanné to our colleagues. The millions of motorists going on vacation on these axes could therefore benefit from it.

For now, the details of this device are not yet stopped. The discount would be effective in July and August, the date of the summer holidays, without the terminal being precisely defined yet. It would be added to the executive rebate, which will remain effective until July 31, but which is applied throughout the territory.

The government is counting on competition between suppliers, including that between distributors such as Intermarché, Casino, Système U and Leclerc, in order to see promotional operations of this type multiply. Enough to remove a few precious cents from the final bill paid by motorists. “It’s the normal game of the operation of competition that will work, all this will be for the benefit of the consumer“, noted a representative of the executive in April. “Maybe it can inspire competitors to do the same“, commented the boss of the group, in front of readers of The Dispatch.

The unknown price this summer

This summer, fuel prices – especially diesel – could remain high, depending, in particular, on the evolution of the war in Ukraine and the implementation of an embargo on Russian oil and petroleum products. At the end of April, a liter of diesel remained at a high level, around 1.88 euros, as did gasoline, around 1.8 euros. And this, despite the government discount: without it, the different fuels would approach or even exceed the symbolic bar of two euros per litre.

Holidaymakers leaving by car this summer are therefore likely to plan a higher transport budget than in previous years. It remains to be seen what the government has up its sleeve to protect the purchasing power of households: during the campaign, Emmanuel Macron recalled wanting a new device, in the event of re-election. This help, more meaningful and focused“, According to Bruno Le Maire, would concern the biggest riders as well as the most fragile households. The boss of Bercy hopes that this new device will be ready and voted “in the summer“.
