Less than 6 months and already three boxes

Decidedly, we do not stop Fuji in this second half of 2022. In addition to the launches of optics here and there, the Japanese firm has been marketing with the X-T5 its third APS-C sensor box since June 2022. To facilitate production, the company cheats a bit by offering devices that are aesthetically very similar; indeed, only the sensor is different between the X-H2S and X-H2. With the X-T5, we find ourselves – unsurprisingly – in front of a case very close to the X-T4. And there’s still no successor to the X-T30 in sight.

In the purest Fuji tradition

From the X-T4, it takes on the curves and classic Fuji DNA, with a plethora of dials for a device that still looks vintage. It also retains a dual SD card port (UHS-II), but without compatibility with CFexpress type B cards as on the X-H2 (S). The viewfinder also inherits the definition of the X-T4 (3.69 Mpts), but slightly improves the magnification to 0.8x.

Rather featherweight

For the monitor, Fuji is going back to the time of the X-T3, by reinstalling a tilting LCD screen of 1.84 Mpts. Strange choice when the X-T4 had a screen on a ball joint. In fact, the X-T5, if not for its slightly deeper handle, looks more like an X-T3. It is also almost more compact than the latter (129.5 x 91 x 63.8 mm) and with its 557 g, it is 50 g lighter than the X-T4. Wise choice.

A disguised X-H2

The Fujifilm X-T5 also inherits the latest advances made with the XH series. Thus, the sensor (still stabilized on five axes) is now the 40.2 Mpx X-Trans BSI CMOS 5 HR, accompanied by the X-Processor 5 CPU, both of which already equip the X-H2 that we tested in early October. 2022. Moreover, in terms of photo functions, the X-T5 is in fact a carbon copy of the X-H2.

It uses the same new generation autofocus system, which we found quite efficient. It also benefits from the fastest electronic shutter on the market, capable of reaching 1/180,000 s. The burst reaches 15 fps in mechanical shutter, 13 in electronic and even 20 fps with a 1.29x crop.

8K swapped for 6.2K

If the photo functions are identical to the X-H2 – we think in particular of the 160 Mpx mode of the pixel shift -, the video capabilities of the box are however less advanced. Where the X-H2 offers 8K at 30 fps in Apple ProRes HQ 4:2:2, the X-T5 is “only” limited to 6.2K and 30 fps in 4:2: 2 10 bits, All-In or Long-GOP internally (max. 360 Mbt/s)… but no ProRes on the horizon internally.

The micro-HDMI output (type D) makes it possible to obtain 6.2K in Apple ProRes Raw 12 bits or Blackmagic Raw. The limitation of 29 consecutive minutes is no longer applicable, and the device could last about 90 minutes while filming in 6.2K before overheating.

Slow motion up to 240 fps and Full HD

For other formats, you can count on 4K UHD or DCI, in classic mode up to 60 fps or high quality (the latter being limited to 30 fps). For lovers of slow motion, you can go up to 240 fps in Full HD. The different logs are of course included.

Along with the launch of the X-T5, Fujifilm is introducing a specially designed grip for the body, the MHG-XT5. It will not be necessary to remove it to change the battery or the SD card. The base is also compatible with the Arca-Swiss quick attach system.

Price and availability

The Fujifilm X-T5 will be marketed (in black or silver) from November 17, 2022 at a bare price of €1999, an increase of €200 compared to the launch price of the X-T4 in 2020. Two kits will be available. The first, including the camera and the Fujinon XF 18-55mm F2.8 R LM OIS, will set you back €2399. The second, with the body and the Fujinon XF 16-80mm F4 R OIS WR, will be sold for 2499 €. The MHG-XT5 handle will be offered for 149 €.

Nice competition

Inevitably, this X-T5 will find itself struggling with the X-H2 offered 250 € more expensive, but so similar. It is also in direct competition with its ancestor, the X-T4. Some 24×36 boxes will also be in competition under the 2000 € mark, such as the Sony Alpha 7C (A7C), which is not in last place in terms of compactness, or the Panasonic Lumix S5, formidable in video. Finally, it is a rival of choice for the Canon EOS R7, which also has it under the hood.
