Fujinon XF56mmF1.2 R WR, a nice update for a portrait specialist

Fujifilm has unveiled a new lens, the Fujinon XF56mmF1.2 R WR. If there was already a lens similar to the catalog of the Japanese manufacturer, it now benefits from a welcome optical and mechanical update.

Fujifilm has the XF 56mm F/1.2 R in its range of APS-C lenses. This ultra-bright pebble offers a focal length equivalent to 85mm when mounted on a Fujifilm X-series hybrid like the announced Fujifilm X-H2 at the same time. Four years after its launch, the Japanese optician is renewing the recipe with the Fujinon XF 56mm F/1.2 R WR, which brings a few updates.

A revised optical construction

The new XF 56mm F1.2 R WR opts for a new optical formula, now benefiting from 13 elements (compared to 11 previously) divided into 8 groups, including an ED (low dispersion) element as well as two aspherical elements. This has improved the focusing distance from 70cm to 50cm, making the lens even more versatile.

Fujifilm has also taken advantage of this new version to introduce a new diaphragm with 11 blades, compared to 7 on the old model. The objective is to improve the rendering of the bokeh by giving the pupil a rounder shape.

The barrel of the lens has also been updated, benefiting, as its name suggests, from tropicalization. The set has 9 seals to resist humidity and rain. Fujifilm announces operation down to -10°C while the front lens gains a fluorine treatment, hydrophobic and protecting the lens from dirt.

Price & availability

Although no launch date has been announced, the Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R WR is expected for the end of September at the announced price of €1199.
